Biography
Sebastian Winkels is a director, editor and dramaturg of nonfictional films. He graduated at Film University Konrad Wolf Babelsberg and lives in Berlin. His films as a director, such as “7 Brothers” (2003, German Film Critique’s Prize) and “Talking Money” (2017, Nonfiktionale Award) explore confined communication spaces and an idea of participatory storytelling.
As an editor he was involved in “Koundi & The National Thursday” (by Astrid Ariane Atodji, Best Documentary/African Academy Awards 2010), “From the Sidelines” (by Simon Brückner, won German Competition at Dokfest München 2015), “Chasing Houses” (by Justin Time, 2016), “Belleville – Belle et Rebelle” (Daniela Abke, premiered at Film Fest Hamburg 2021) and “A German Party” (by Simon Brückner, premiered at Berlinale 2022).
Sebastian Winkels has developed the creative documentary training program “Indonesia – Ten Years After Reformasi” (2008 – 2013) and worked as a mentor at international doc film labs and initiatives since 2009. He has joined First Cut Lab as an Editing Consultant in 2019.
